if ur looking for a cheap amp u can go with audiobahn or lanzar. lanzar is cheap but the quality is good for the price. I have two different lanzar amps and both have out bumped other ones. its all on how u setup the wiring the crossovers and the box that the subs r in. I had a 4000 2 channel lanzar hooked to 2 audiobahn flame q subwoofers and it pounded louder than almost anything around here, even bumped out 4 jl audio 12's. I have never had a problem with audiobahn or lanzar though.

Sorry to disagree with the last poster, but just because it says 500-watts, does NOT make it 500-watts. There is no law that controls what car amplifier manufacturers can claim as there is in home equipment, nor how the measurements were obtained.

A hair dryer can be 1000-watts. Does this make it a good amplifier? No, as this wattage is heat. A car amplifier can claim wattage that includes its heat production, which of course, has nothing to do with output power. 500-watts could be 100-watts of power and 400-watts of heat.

Better manufacturers are more true with their power ratings.

Then again, even if two amps are exactly the same (and true) power ratings, it doesn't mean they will sound the same. It all has to do with the quality of internal components, the design of the power supplies, etc. You could take one of the old school Harman Kardon CA260 amps (60x2) and it would probably cream a lot of amps today two to three times its size.

Heres the score on amps....all of them produce wattage. If it says its a 500 watt amp, its a 500 watt amp regardless of who makes it.....its the crossover, and filtering capabilities of the amp that cost money. As well as the distortion. Alpine makes a great budget amp...its powerful, has good crossovers and has very little distortion. Thump makes a pile of shit amp and has tons of distortion. Distortion is the number one cause of blown speakers. So, pay to play. A good amp should cost around $1 per watt.

Stick with major brand names, like JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Alpine, Kenwood, etc.... No name brands often don't put out the rated watts, have poor sound quality, can destroy speakers, and will probably pick up engine noise (a high pitch whine that's consistent with engine speed)

The brand usually will matter. Not as if one is better than another by their name, but a brand has earned a reputation for certain standards on their components and circuit designs. Make sure you understand the meaning of RMS and Peak watt ratings. As well as Ohms. Some of these cheap "500 watt" amps can only steadily bump out a joke.
